Strategy games that take weeks, played a few minutes at a time

Gaming Welowenig covers browser games you can start for free and keep going for months: map wars that unfold over weeks and cities that grow a little every day. Nothing to install. This page lists four, and the table below shows how much attention each one wants.

The four games

Each button opens the game's own website in a new tab. We don't host the games and we can't see your account there.

Supremacy 1914

First World War grand strategy on a shared map

You take over a country in 1914 and run its provinces, factories and armies against other people doing the same. Troops move in real time, so an order you give at breakfast lands around dinner.

Diplomacy is half the game. Most matches are decided by who talks to whom, which makes it a good fit for people who like messages more than reflexes.

  • One match runs for weeks
  • Real-time, keeps going while you're away
  • Free to start, optional gold

Call of War

Second World War strategy, same calm clock

The setting moves to the 1940s and adds a research tree: tanks, aircraft and naval units become available as a match goes on. Production and supply lines matter more than a single big battle.

Compared with Supremacy 1914, there's more to manage per check-in. Expect to open it three or four times a day during a busy stretch.

  • Matches last weeks
  • Research tree for units
  • Free to start, optional gold

Forge of Empires

City builder that moves through the ages

Your town begins in the Stone Age and climbs through history one research step at a time. You collect from buildings, plan the layout, and fight small turn-based battles on a hex map when you need land.

There's no finish line, so you can play at your own speed for as long as it suits you.

  • No end date
  • 10 to 20 minutes a day
  • Free to start, optional diamonds

Elvenar

Fantasy city building, elves or humans

At the start you pick a race, elves or humans, and that choice sets the look and the buildings of your city. Growth comes from production chains, research and trading with neighbours.

Combat is optional and mostly solved by planning. It's the calmest game on this page and the one most often played alongside a podcast.

  • No end date
  • Short daily visits
  • Free to start, optional diamonds

Why slow games

A match that lasts three weeks can't be rushed, which takes some pressure off. You play when you have a minute, not when the game says so.

War games reward steady attention, since allies count on each other. If your week is unpredictable, the city builders are the easier fit.

Before your first match

  • Create the game account on the game's own domain; check the address bar.
  • Set a monthly spending cap before you open the shop.
  • Turn off push notifications unless you really want them.

Questions

Can I play these in French?

Language options are set on each game's site, so check the settings there after you open it.

Do they cost anything?

All four are free to start and free to keep playing. Each sells a premium currency that mostly speeds things up.

Phone or computer?

A recent browser on either works. The war maps are much easier on a larger screen; the city builders are fine on a tablet.

Is Gaming Welowenig connected to the game companies?

Only through referral links. Some pay us a small fee when used. We don't run, own or speak for any of the games.
